Beaches Reduces

Beaches Reduces is a community initiative to reduce single-use takeout waste in The Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto. We invite local businesses to participate by displaying our BYO sticker at the door and accepting customers’ reusable containers whenever possible. Beaches Reduces was founded by Adrianna & Gary Couto in May of 2019 and has since signed up 23 community businesses. Each business places a BYO sticker in their window indicating that reusable containers are accepted, or they support other waste reduction activities (i.e sell secondhand clothing, repair electronics).

 

We work closely with the Beach Village BIA to engage with the community. Beaches Reduces is also a member of the Green Neighbour’s Network (GNN) and Future Grounds (David Suzuki’s Blue Dot initiative); and has previously collaborated with other east end Reduces’ groups & Plastic Free Beach Toronto. We are a small local group who meets virtually each month.

​We participate in The Beach Village BIA events such as Jazz it up in Kew and Movie nights in the park. You can also find us at Withrow Park Farmers Market, hosting community film screening nights, or at one of our many shoreline cleanups. We also host monthly beach cleanups to help keep our shoreline clear of litter from April- September.
